What you will learn:

The Freedom of Information Act has
become a major tool for journalists seeking to uncover
information about how we are governed, and knowing how
to make a good and relevant Freedom of Information (FoI)
request has become an integral part of a journalist’s toolkit.

This practical course is designed to help journalists make
effective use of the legislation, including how to establish
a legal case to challenge refusals. Suitable for journalists
with no experience of using the FoI Act and for those with
experience who are looking to develop their skills.

Workshop content includes:

How to use the Act effectively
What information you are entitled to and from whom
How to frame requests to get the information you want – terminology and approach
Examples of good and bad requests
How the Act’s exemptions work, including cost grounds
Challenging refusals and building a strong appeal case
with the Information Commissioner
Interrogating your material to build a strong story
